Welcome to Pro Se

Pro se (adj.) - "Latin for 'for oneself, on one's own behalf.' When a litigant proceeds without legal counsel, they are said to be proceeding 'pro se.'” {1}

I decided to go to law school because I wanted to use whatever smarts I had to make the law more accessible for people who didn’t have the time and resources (and masochism) to take three years off and $200,000 out in loans to learn about The Law. I think the law should be accessible, but the status quo within the older established legal community is to use unnecessarily large words because that’s what everyone else is doing so that’s what you need to do to fit in and sound smart. I’ve tried to stick to my idea of making the law accessible throughout law school by not buying into that trope. I’ve of course learned the fancy language and can use latin casually in sentences now, but I’m not interested in bringing that energy into a world where, more than ever, people need access to legal remedies.

What does all this have to do with a blog? Well, while I’m not going to be solving the world’s legal woes by publishing posts that only my mom (hi mom) and future employers (sorry) are going to read, I figure a blog written by a woman in her 20s with tattoos and a potty mouth might be a nudge  in the right direction to get this profession into the 21st century. We’ve been here for almost 20 years, my dudes. Welcome.

I’m really interested in the practicality of the law, in how it works day to day and how we see it play out on a local, national, and international level. Pro Se is going to be a blog that will hopefully answer the legal ‘why’ behind what’s going on in the news. It will be written in a way that I hope people will find entertaining and easy to read and at least somewhat informative, so they can walk away with a slightly better grasp on current events and show off that knowledge the next time they need to impress someone.

Naming the blog Pro Se felt particularly apt given my interest in the law being more accessible for non-lawyers and people without representation, plus if you put Pro Se together you get Prose so it’s kind of a writing pun idk don’t overthink it.

*DISCLAIMER* Nothing I write on this blog should ever be taken as legal advice. This entire project is just me applying my limited knowledge of The Law to the news and trying my best to analyze it all. I am not an expert in anything. I don’t even have my JD yet.

With all that out of the way, let’s get started.

If you have questions about what’s happening in the news and want me to take a crack at figuring out what’s going on, you can slide into my DMs over on Instagram or Twitter.
